Kay,

I have used several of these. The programming cable and software are available
from a number of sources -- i.e. Vertex dealers. I have purchased both cables
and software from rfwiz.com (actually MultecCommunications -- a Vertex dealer
in New England). They want $72.00 for the software and cable. Their web site
has quite a bit of information on it. They also sell the service manual,
although you could probably get the manual more quickly directly from Vertex
in California. I don't know whether Vertex will sell the cables and software
directly to end users. There are also sometimes cables on eBay that are
supposed to be compatable. The cable plugs into the mic jack.

I have used these radios marked with 25 KHz, but in reality, you can program
them for 12.5KHz splits. Of course the IF filters may be a bit wide, but it
does work fine in terms of programming. You might want to check the
deviation. Most radios I have seen go down into the 440 ham band. They could
probably use some tweaking if you intend to mainly operate the radio down
there. They are basically nice radios and do the job well.

As far as I know, the radio comes in at least 3 versions. One is 4 channels,
the others are 24 and 99 channels. There are a lot of functions that can be
programmed.

Hope this helps a bit.

Fred Bray
