[Yaesu] FT857 or FT857D?

The "D" suffix has nothing to do with a power supply, or lack thereof
these days. The "D" suffix on the FT-817, FT-857, and FT-897 radios
distinguish the original (non-D) versions from the upgraded versions.

The FT-817D has the 60M band added and includes the internal battery and
a charger as standard.
The FT-857D has the 60M band added and includes the internal DSP unit as
standard.
The FT-897D has the 60M band added and includes the internal TCXO as
standard.

To answer the original question, if your FT-857 s/n begins with a "4"
you have a "D" model (don't know if any "3" s/n's were "D" models, but I
doubt it). If you just bought it new, as you stated, it's a "D".
