A lot of stations are using soundcard modes that use the microphone input of
the rig. An interface (simple audio transformers and resistive pads) to
reduce the level of the soundcard and to take receive audio is required.
On the net look for PSK31, MTTY, MFSK16 modes. MTTY may allow use of the
converters but I don't know. You should be able to run AFSK for RTTY using
the MTTY program.
Hamcomm, winpsk, and winwarbler are other free programs using your
soundcard.
Yahoo hosts a PSK31 mailing list and egroups hosts a MFSK16 list.
The only requirement for the rig is that it runs SSB with reasonably clean
RF out and that it is frequency stable. I'd bet the FT-101 meets all these
criterion; however, be certain to derate the power to the finals for any key
down mode especially with sweep tube finals. I'd be real tempted to only run
the finals at just above or equal their normal idle current. If there is an
AM power level mentioned in the manuals that you have, you might use that
power value as a starting point. You'll still make contacts especially with
PSK or MFSK modes with low power.

I recently picked up a 101EE. After many years I am now
putting a station together. In the past I have only listened.
I have been receiving on Teletypes also through assorted
converters, mostly military. I have AFSK and FSK outputs on
my converters but no input (that I am aware of) on the 101.
I am more of a mechanic(you have to be for the printers)
then a tech.I have a full manual for the 101 and I also
browsed through an old manual for a FLDX400 and that manual
stated something about an option that could be installed in
the 400. The question is can I do the same with the 101 or
is there an easier way?
