Jim,
I owned both radios and operated them both side-by-side for several years.  I don't think they were even close in comparison. The FT-1000D clearly outperformed the FT-990 in all respects, although the FT-990 was a FINE radio too.  In this case, I think you truly got what you paid for.  The FT-1000D was probably the BEST radio I have ever owned in the 49 years I have been playing with them, and I have owned most of them at one time or another.
