Jim,

Your statement has merit, except when you are driving a boat anchor with
grounded grid and untuned input, like my Clipperton-L which does not even
have the 50ohm load like some linears.
Built in tuners save having to have an external tuner between the radio and
linear. Its also nice that most are automatic.

Another point toward the original problem. Many built in tuners do not have
sufficient tuning range to match the impedance of some grounded grid
linears. This could be the reason some mfr dont recommend they be used with
linears. My Ft-920 will only match a published range of 16-150ohm. However
it does match the Clipperton-L with less than 1.2:1 from 160m thru 15m.

I'm not familiar with the Alpha 86 skematic, but if it has a 50ohm load on
the input, perhaps some of the input resistors are bad causing it to reflect
an impedance outside the matching range of the 1000MP.
