[Yaesu] Another FT857 mystery vs the 100D

Thank to all who provided information. I agree with Steve--why the 857?
Other than it is easier to figure out what buttons to push while mobile. I
was looking to purchase a 100D last Dayton, but on arrival I discovered that
the 100D price WENT UP and it was marked closeout, coupled with a nasty
salesman caused me to postpone the purchase. Starting to get the new radio
itch again. While I like Yaesu and they have always been leading the pack
with their radio software, I am disappointed with all the marketing games.
SO much so that I have been looking at the ICOM 706MKIIG. No games by them
(yet). JUST LOOKING, not buying the ICOM. --Mike,WV2ZOW

And a big one in my mind which makes the 100D the rig of choice over the 857
-- the receiver specifications as measured by the ARRL (see the White Paper,
free to members) on both the 100D and 857 shows the 100D far superior.

In fact, the numbers are so much better, I cannot understand why the 857 was
even produced - except to have a new model to taut and to retire the 100D
which with the "standard" options must have been a low margin rig for Yaesu.

FT100D comes standard with:
500 Hz CW filter ($149 option for FT857)
High stability oscillator ($89 option for FT857)
DSP ($59 option for the FT857)
 Wide-band receive (n/a for FT857)

Adding those three options would add $297 to the price of the FT857, making
its
"normal" cost nearly $1100 (ignoring the free DSP and mail-in rebate)
compared
to the FT100D's $899.

Hope this helps.
