Hi Dave -
You could probably collect a lot of information about
the properties of the 897D meter output by hooking up
an ordinary VOM. That would allow you to check
polarity and voltages, and allow you to see how it
would behave with a milliammeter type of load.
If you know the impedance of the VOM, you could
also check the source impedance of the output.
With all that info, it should be fairly straightforward
to decide whether one of your 'S' meters might work.
And if it looked favorable, the real proof would be
to TRY one, of course!

Subject: [Yaesu] FT-897D external 'S' meter????
Page 19 of my manual mentions a jack on the underside of the unit for an
external Analog 'S' meter.
Has anyone given this a try?
I cannot find any additional information about it.
Do I use a plain 10 or 100 uA meter movement in series with this jack...or
do I require a resistor and look across the jack at a few millivolts...
I'd sure like to make use of one of them old Lafayette S meters I have
laying around!!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
....Dave
