[Yaesu] ft-847

Hi 
 Picked up a used ft-847,all is well except for the ARS, auto repeater shift. Will not function. I reset the cpu and made sure the ARS said "on" in both menus and that the proper amount of off set was picked in the other menus, also. No way will it pick either + or - as it is suppose to do as it tunes across the 2 meter or 440 band. 
 Is there something Iam missing to do? read and reread the page on ARS  can't find anything. 
HELP...HELP
