Does the receiver die on all bands?
You may try treaking the trimmer capacitor associated with the crystal for
the band segment you are on. The FT-101 manual calls for 0.3 V rms for the
LO voltage, using an RF probe. If the V is too far off, the crystal stops
oscillating and the receiver will either nor come in, or sometimes 'faint'.
A little touchup of the crystal's trimmer cap pops it right back in.
