Many years ago I found that using the extra contacts on the dow-key to short the RECEIVER coax while transmitting (not just opening the circuit with the coax part of the relay). This should protect the input transistors or limiting diodes, the old tube radios did not care. Of course, with a few hours practice, you can copy the relay just like an old telegraph sounder.
