Hi Scott,
I would just encourage you to keep trying until you find the right learning
method. I tried for a long time to learn code to no avail. Finally I found
the right teacher and was surprised how easy it is to learn.
Like anything in life, we follow different paths based on choices. If the
time committment to learn code is not worth it to you ... then just forget about
it. There are many hams who are no-code techs for life. If you really want
to get involved with HF SSB then keep searching for the right method.
Amateur radio IS a hobby ... but there are many implications of service to
the public attached to your license. Everything comes with a price. Don't
forget that there are many emergency situations where the ONLY communications
method is CW. With only a few parts you can build a transmitter (albiet a noisy
one) that will get the message out. Heck, you can send CW with a hammer
against a pipe if you have to! You don't have to be fast but you do need to know
the code.
Again, my best advice is to keep trying. I hope to hear you on HF SSB one
day.
