[Yaesu] VX5R on the way

The majority of the new generation of palm sized HTs get hot to the touch
when putting out more than 2-3W. It takes about 12W+ of dc power to produce
the 5W of rf, so the remaining wattage is eventually expended as heat...
The older (and MUCH larger) HTs of yore could run 4 or 5W rf and never get
more than slightly warm in your hand. The reason is that there was 10ozs of
aluminum frame in the radio to act like a heat sink and dissipate that to
the air.
I have a few Yaesu HTs of small to large size. I can work virtually all the
repeaters within 20 miles on 2 or 3W (some on only a .5W setting - and one
VERY tall one 80+ miles away on only 2W). If you start at the lowest power
setting, you'll probably find that you rarely need to go to the 5W setting.
And if you do, even the 5W may not do it...
Keeping the 'talk' part of the equation short also helps... 'Ratchet jaw'
hams have HOT radios... Remember the 5:5:90 equation. I like to live by 1%
talk, 4% listen, and 95% quiet.
Running on 5W for any extended period of time with a radio that does not
have enough material to dissipate the heat WILL shorten the life of the
radio (and provide for relatively short battery life as well).

Subject: [Yaesu] VX5R on the way
I ordered a used VX5R today, finding a price that was
too good to pass up. Last night I went through the
eham.net reviews of the VX5R, and found that they were
the typical Yaesu review. 2/3 of the people loved it,
and 1/3 hated it. Pretty much like the FT100D and the
VX7R. Anyway, several reviewers stated that the HT
gets really hot when running at 5 watts. is this
still a problem. I will not be using the DC cord, only
running off of the battery pack, but may have to go to
high power at times to get into the local repeater
good enough. Hoping the 2 watt setting will do it,
though. I don't know the serial number of the unit
which I have bought, but am interested in others
experiences with the case getting hot, or anything
else I should know about the VX5R.
Looks like it will be a fun little HT, and am glad
that it has 6 meters included. That is one of the
things that kept me from going to the local Radio
Shack and getting the HTX420. That and the wideband
receive.
