John,
As shipping manager of a small telecommunications outfit I deal with both
UPS and Fedex every day. We have a daily pickup account with both and ship
numerous ground and air packages every day.
We do use UPS for most ground shipments and have been very satisfied. In the
past eight years we have had very few problems with deliveries and only one
damage claim that I can recall off the top of my head. Most damage problems
are caused by poor packaging...a few crumpled up papers or a handful of
packing peanuts just does not cut it with electronic equipment.
Since we have accounts with both the cost for ground service with either one
is virtually the same to a given location so this is a non-issue. Yes, you
may receive a package earlier from one or the other but this is a function
of where their hub is. For example, using UPS we get one day ground service
from Kansas City while Minneapolis is two days. Since our business is in
northern Iowa you might expect it to be the other way around but such is not
the case. Fedex gets stuff to Illinois faster but UPS wins going to
Nebraska.
I would guess most radio dealers use UPS because it has been around longer
and this is how they have always shipped. Fedex ground is relatively new and
may eventually get more of the business. I prefer UPS because they have
been very reliable for us. I also greatly prefer the UPS shipping software.
