Hi Robin,

I'm a proud owner of an FT-847 in addition to an FT-1000D.

The 847 is used for my VHF/UHF/Satellite and backup HF work. The radio is a poor performer on HF compared to better rig like the FT-1000D. It is probably better than something like and FT-840, but not a lot better.

Above 50 MHz though, the radio works just great. You generally don't have the SNR and interference you do at HF. The power out of the radio on the 3 upper bands is very adequate. I have bricks with mine as well.

The Satellite mode is excellent. It has 12 memories specifically for storing your satellite offsets so you can easily switch between modes. It's very easy to work with.

As for an IF rig, sure. I've played with it a little as my S band IF for AO-40, but I use my FT-817 for that. This way, I don't have to hook and unhook the 2m antenna. Nor do I have to worry about the fact that I forgot to take the 2.4 GHz downconverter off before transmitting on 2m! But a lot of guys use it for that.

Compared to the TS-2000, I think the 847 is a much better value. Not as many bells and whistles but you don't need all those and the 847 is a LOT less money.

I love mine.

73,

Jon
