[Yaesu] FT847 & CT39 cable

Has anyone used a Yaesu cable to the packet jack on an 847, with a laptop
that has no serial ports, successfully?
A friend of mine, who is trying to get the above combination to work using a
Belkin USB to serial adapter, cannot get the push to talk to work, and we
were wondering if anybody else has had success doing this? Maybe some one
can offer a different solution,
We are using a sound card for the TNC with the AGWPE software. Any help
would be most appreciated.
