[Yaesu] comments on buying a used HF rig

Hart,
My first choice would be an Yaesu FT-900CAT, only thing it needs is a CW filter,
preferably INRAD 400 or 500 Hz one. Collins SSB filter is fine, antenna tuner
is good, metering, VOX, memories, bandchanging, modes, simplicity of operation
yet versitile with a few menu changes for things that you set and forget. Internal
speaker is not the best, and knobs are one the small side, not the best for
big hands. Mine is a keeper, I've used it mobile, portable, Field Day, QRP,
and for base station use. All it usually needs is power, antenna, and a mike,
and you are ready to go. Price is in $600-700 range. The FT-840 is cheaper,
but no antenna tuner, SWR meter, and doesn't have the specs of the FT-900. Second
choice would be an FT-890AT, but it doesn't have the nice metering and readout
that the 900 has. The FT-900 is also quiet, better than my FT-990 in that respect.
My 900 has that quality of being a fun radio, hard to describe, just fun to
use. Hope this is of interest.
