Al, I also own a VX-5R. You're correct. The VX-5R is a different radio
when used with a better antenna(s). At the moment, I'm using a "new
old stock" Standard CAT051gh antenna, with a BNC to SMA adapter,
for six meters. It works great. I can get into a local 6 meter machine
with the Standard antenna. The same machine is out of range with
the stock antenna. A fantastic triband antenna is the NCG MH-510.
It's equipped with a SMA connector and approximately 20.5" (525 mm)
in length. This NCG antenna sells for $37.95 at HRO. You will not
believe your ears when you connect it to an external antenna.
