The Nye is a fine tuner... the company I mentioned is PALSTAR...
www.palstar.com They make a VERY high quality line of tuners (and lots
of other things) in Ohio just north of Dayton. Their inductors and caps
are all made right there in the factory. The units are beautifully
finished. (chassis made by R.L. Drake) All bare metal surfaces inside are
electro-plated, even the chassis covers are completely finished and
painted on the INSIDE surface. Tuning is silky smooth and the reduction
ball drives allow highly repeatable settings. The units are heavy and sit
true on the desktop. And as a bonus, when you receive the tuner and
remove it from the box you won't hear loose hardware rattling around
inside. When you take the cover off to recover the adrift screws and nuts
you won't find un-soldered joints either. These are privledges reserved
for MFJ customers.
All that aside, Palstar is the only company presently in business that
builds a tuner where the balun is on the INPUT side of the circuit
rather than the OUTPUT (antenna) side. This means the balun is not
subjected to the often bizzare and highly reactive signals from the
untuned line. The cheapo voltage baluns in the MFJs will saturate,
spray parasitics, and easily overheat when much power is applied while
feeding a balanced line. The Palstar will not be subjected to this
since the balun always sees a non-reactive load just like the
transmitter.
I saw them at Dayton the last two years... the tuners were on display
with the covers off... very impressive. I ended up buying several..
one for myself and a few friends. They sold out their complete
inventory at Dayton. It's one of those things that you really
appreciate when you see them.
