I've taken a few apart in the past- and it's a tough job that usually =
takes a while and results in at least some minor damage to the plastic =
case. Thank goodness for super-glue.

Some of the original Yaesu HT battery packs are 'glued' together with a =
yellow colored tar-like substance. The 'glue' is a yellow substance =
that never seems to completely harden. I did in fact come close to =
destroying the first one (a pack for an FT-530) a few years ago. It's =
such a good adhesive, that I would like to find out what it is and buy =
some for general household use. =20

There are a few e-shops that claim to be able to get these apart without =
any damage and 'rebuild' (basically put in new NMHI cells) them. I gave =
up on the second pack for another ft-530 and bought a new NMHI after =
market one from an on-line seller (Batteries America). The new NMHI =
pack was:=20
About half the retail price of Yaesu's NICAD one
    12V 1100mah Vs the original 12V 600mah pack
and did work and charge AOK.

However, there is a noticeable difference in overall construction =
quality from Yaesu's original one. This included:
a.. A less than perfect fit onto the radio (OK, but not perfect)
b.. A less than 'click secure' feel to the slide lock
c.. A not so perfect case half alignment
d.. No rubber plug for the external pin jack
e.. Creates a spark at the pin jack when connected - even if the =
charger wall-wart is NOT plugged in.
f.. (I suspect the aftermarket pack does not have the same diode/caps =
for the protection circuitry)
g.. I suspect that their is no spark when I use the desktop charger - =
but I can't see the charger contacts well as the battery is inserted. =
=20
h.. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Since then, I've bought a few genuine Yaesu ones for the FT-530, XV-150, =
and some other brand commercial HTs. They are more expensive - almost =
double. But for ME, it's well worth the extra $25 per battery pack.

Is there any way to open these up for rebuild?? I've poked and=20
prodded and pried, but to no avail. Is there a secret method?
