Just for the record:

The Yaseu Operating Manual for the 736R Illustrates the use of
the microphone plug with a diagram of the Yaesu MH-1B8.

It has 8 pins.

Pin 1 goes to UP signal
Pin 2 goes to UP-DOWN common
Pin 3 goes to DOWN signal
Pin 4 and 5 go to FAST
Pin 6 goes to PTT signal
Pin 7 goes to PTT and Mic Common
Pin 8 goes to Mike Signal  (200 ohms to 10K with 600 ohms optimum).

I'd be interested in talking to other 736R owners -- does not seem to be 
too much discussion of them on this list.
