Hi Dennis,

Had a FT847, and it is a piece of junk! It is
especially terrible on HF. No selectivity at all in
the receiver-could easily hear stations 5 KHZ away
from the frequency I was on. Also lacks very basic
things found in todays rigs like a SWR meter, and a
memory keyer. For the price it is a complete rip off.
I wouldn't pay more than $500 for one. At the price
for a new one, you would do much better with a Kenwood
TS2000-much better receiver, with built in filters
(you will need them in the FT847, and they come at
$150 a pop), and more features. For the price of a
used FT847 I would recommend a used Icom 756 or Icom
746. Less menu driven, and much better on HF. The
756 will also give you dual watch, if you are not
interested in 2 meters. The Yaesu FT920 also gets
very high feedback, and it is in the same price range
as the FT847. Saw a used one the other day for $700.

In my opinion, the FT847 was a total embarrassment as
a replacement for the FT736-now the FT736, that was a
VHF radio. I am currently using a FT100D which runs
rings around the FT847, but as you mentioned with the
706, it is extremely menu driven.
