Hi Edward,

Some devices are 'Data Comm Equip' (DCE) and some are 'Data Terminal
Equipment' (DTE).  When you connect two devices of the same type, you
typically need a 'null modem' cable or adapter on the cable.  This
'null-modem' crosses the signals - so each device thinks it attached to the
correct ype of device...

Radio shack sells a 9-pin null-modem adapter (about 1" long with 9-pin
connectos on both ends) for about $6 - letting you use it for devices
requiring one and leaving it off for those that do not
