Hi Renee..
If you don't mind buying something used, an FT-900 has a stellar receiver, smallish in size, and a great reputation for reliability. It does not have VHF. So if you're interest is primarily HF and want a great radio with all the features you'll save a lot of money. The remoteable front panel makes it great for mobile work too. I've had one for about 6 years and have used/abused the heck out of it and it just keeps playing.
Display is wonderful..
No menues to wade through every time you want to change something... eyes on the road.
Bullet proof receiver. (leagues ahead of the Kenwood 450, and Icom 706 models, also better than 847)
Built in keyer, memories, AM/FM.. etc, etc, etc.
Typical price on Ebay around $700..

I am looking for something that is easy to use, can travel occasionally (Field Day and such), and has good selectivity and sensitivity on receive. I do some contesting but also like to ragchew; mainly all SSB. Also, what would be good additional filters to get for either of these radios?
