It is called `blocking' and it is normal. It is because the lowest value of
IF signal (point of maximum negative modulation) at the am detector's input is
higher than the peak value that is normally received.
Did you know that? Listening to a 50,000 Watt transmitter in your county
instead of a 100 Watt signal from some other state does that.
Turning the AGC control from automatic (on) to manual (off) implies that you
will be controlling the RF and IF gain manually.
