The FT-990 was designed AFTER the FT-1000 and incorporates several
substantial improvements. (It also lacks the second receiver.)
The most notable improvement is the pre-amp, which is the latest style

and is such a low noise amp., the pre-amp bypass is unnecessary it is

preceded with a PIN diode attenuator for AGC and the manual RF gain control.

Additionally the IF conversions were optimized to the point only 3
frequency conversions are necessary for a .1 to 30 mHz reception with NO
birdies with in it's entire range. (self induced tone or heterodyne/s)
The reason for more than one conversion is not to improve gain, it
is mostly to allow more opportunities for filtering and image/birdie
avoidance. (which become more necessary with wider frequency operation)
(I love my FT-990, I use it mostly for CW.)
