The MRF150 is available, and replacement/substitutes are also available.
THOMPSON makes an interchangeable transistor, and there are still quite a few
origional motorola MRF150s available from RFparts and others, and although
MOTOROLA has ceased making the part, its manufacture has not stopped, it has
been TRANSFERRED, anong with many of the other motorola high-power RF
devices, to other manufacturers, who will continue to make the parts.--A
stock QUADRA VL1000 amp will normall exceed 1,200 watts output if driven by
about 80 watts and no ALC control is used, however if operated in this
manner, distortion products are likely to be much higher than at 1000 watts
or less. The unit will operate with Non-YAESU radios, although it is not
anywhere as convenient, because you will have to generate a carrier and push
the frequncy set button each time you change bands with a non-yaesu radio.
If you use a YAESU radio, such as the FT-767, FT-757, FT-747, FT-890, FT-900,
FT-100,FT-990, FT-1000, FT-1000D, FT-920, FT-1000MP, or the FT-1000MPMK-V,
you will find it a great joy to use, with fully automatic selection of band
and antenna, just as fast as you can push the button on the exciter!---I own
what is probably the worlds ONLY modified, FULL-POWER VL-1000 QUADRA amp, my
unit using 8 MRF151G transistors, and a modified, higher amperage (80 amperes
max.) power supply. MY unit is now capable of CW or FM power outputs on HF
EXCEEDING 2,500watts, and over 1,500watts on 6meters! It also sounds GREAT on
AM PHONE at the 1,500 watt Peak power level, running a carrier of 375
watts.--When operated at the USA legal power of 1,500 watts output, it never
gets too hot to touch ANYWHERE inside, (Except for RF burn danger!) and
operates with distortion levels as low as and in most cases LOWER THAN the
stock unit.--The modifications involved were/are extensive AND expensive, but
I am glad I tackled the job, and I LOVE IT!!!--73s Bob Curry,
