[Yaesu] VL-1000

The MRF150 has not been discontinued,
it was just transferred by Motorola to another
vendor (Microsemi, I believe). Also,
other vendors second source the MRF150
under their own numbers. Check with
Richardson Electronics, a distributor
if you need this part.

The biggest problem with the VL-1000
is that you pay a king's ransom for
it and are 2 dB under the legal limit.
And it is straining just to do that
with only 8 FETs.

I have a surplus marine amplifier with
16 MRF-150's and it is conservatively
rated at 1000 watts in the marine service,
although I can push it to 1500 watts for
ham use. It has huge noisy fans, just like
a tube amplifier. Fortunately, it didn't
cost me much.

If I was going to spend $$$, I would
definitely get a tube amplifier.
