I use Paper Port to do my scanning and file conversion (Paper Port
originally came with my Visioneer Scanner).
Most small schematics need to be scanned with lots of DPI resolution. I
seldom use less than 300 DPI. I probably would scan my FT-990 main diagrams
at 600 DPI because they are so small.
JPEG is really lousy on schematics because it is a lossy compression system.
Most programs allow for the very large .BMP format, and most have some form
of TIFF file formats (.TIF). TIFF can be stored uncompressed and
compressed. A version of TIFF is used on most FAX machines at 100 x 200 DPI
resolution (or greater). TIFF also supports multi-page documents which
programs like Irfan View handle really well.
I have not seen the problem which you mentioned below using JPEG files, but
I have seen this type of thing using some other programs.
