[Yaesu] Adjustment?

After many years of 1000D ownership, I had a qso with someone today
who happened to mention that the carrier offset could be adjusted on
my rig by pressing the fast and packet buttons together.  Sure
enough, doing so caused the frequency display to be replaced
by -2.21.  This function was not mentioned anywhere in my owners
manual.

So being a cautious fellow at heart I wonder if anyone could tell me
whether this can indeed adjust the carrier offset.  If so, what will
be the likely effect?  Any information about this will be
appreciated.

I understand whatever I might do can be easily returned to the
default but before I consider any tweaking I would like to know more
about what I'm doing.  Incidentally, I used the 1000D with a Heil 10
D mike.  I've always received good audio reports but I may want to
obtain a slightly more "mellow" sound without going overboard.
