[Yaesu] FT-840 Tuning Knob

I have seen many comments on eham.net/review re the FT-840 tuning knob freezing up.  A fellow church member informed me this morning his had done the same thing.  Although my FT-840 tuning knob has not frozen up yet, I am curious as to any alternatives besides sending the radio to Yaesu and waiting several weeks for them to replace the encoder.  Would appreciate all comments, suggestions.
