Terry,
A couple things that I forgot to mention about the 990. One is the filter
setup. It has provisions for four filters, 2 SSB and 2 CW, and my radio has
those slots filled. Good thing about the filters is that you can use any
filter any mode. Want 250 Hz with SSB for PSK31? No problem, just push the
buttons, SSB and 250 Hz. Also the so-called "digital filter", actually a
switched capitance filter, works really well on both SSB and CW. If I were
to get another Yaesu radio, I would look at the new 897 first, depending
upon its specs. Another consideration for an HF radio is the Elecraft
K2-100, great radio spec-wise, and not too much more than the 840. Of course
you have to put it together. Final note about 990. It does have some noise I
think from the IF section, and the 900 is a little quieter, but DSP solves
most of the noise problems for me. The Scout is the worst of all, very much
low frequency rumble, especially when listening with good HiFi headphones.
Hope this is of interest.
Darryl, KK5IB
