Hello Folks,
This weekend is the ARRL January VHF Contest, January 21-23, 2017. http://www.arrl.org/january-vhf/
The contest begins 1900 UTC Saturday (11am PST) and ends 0359 UTC Monday.
"Objective: To work as many amateur stations in as many different 2 degrees x 1 degree grid squares as possible using authorized frequencies above 50 MHz..."
For the casual vhf operator this is an great opportunity to find lots of operators on the air, to test the capability of your station, to try a new band or a new mode and have some fun.
Rules changes implemented in 2015 now make it easier to find and work other VHF contesters and non contesters alike.
"7.1 All entrants, regardless of category, are permitted to use spotting assistance or nets including but not limited to DX-alerting nets, internet chat rooms, APRS and other packet, reverse beacon networks and repeaters to identify stations available for contacts and to announce (self-spot) their availability for contacts. Announcements shall be limited to call sign, location, band or frequency, mode and–if applicable–transmitting sequence and listening direction. These methods of spotting assistance may also be used to coordinate antenna peaking prior to initiation of the contact and to explain contest rules, such as the exchange required, for those who need clarification..."
The Cali VHF UHF Page is a great online resource that's available for use. http://www.n6sjv.org/
You may self-spot, spot, share information, make announcements, coordinate contacts (as allowed per the rules), catch a clue, chit chat and more.

Good Luck Everyone
