Hi Jim,
I have used both. I was not very impressed with the FT847, but loved the
TS2000. It is a good performer (not outstanding) on both HF and VHF. It
isn't going to beat out a FTDX5000 or anything like that on HF, but does
hold its own there. A few things it will give you over the FT847:
Built in VOX
Built in SWR meter
Built in CW memory keyer
Built in TCXO (not even an option for 847)
Voice keyer option
Built in DSP based filters
Built in Autotuner
The subreceive is nice for VHF contesting to leave on the 2m and 70cm
simplex frequencies to catch a few extra QSOs that way.
You can do crossband repeat with it as well to get on 6m or 2m SSB while
using a UHF HT. That is pretty cool . I made quite a few QSOs on 6m SSB
while walking around the neighborhood with an HT. You can also use the TTP
on the HT to control different functions of the radio, and even change
frequencies with it. Any HT will do this-it is not the Sky Command function
but you can do that also with the right HT.
Good luck with your decision. If you can do it financially, I would
definitely say go for it!
