I have two of the Alinco HTs for 222 and 902.  I can recommend them.  The main FM simplex channel is 927.5 MHz.  SSB weak signal activity in So.Cal. is mainly between 902.015 and 902.265.  You will also hear FM simplex activity there during contests because DEMI transverters using 144-148 MHz as an i.f. can only cover 902-906 MHz without non-standard l.o. crystals.  Our rover stations mostly use DEMI transverters for 902.

On another reflector, N1LF, in Alabama, suggested an ALINCO 222 & 902/903 FM Handheld as an easy way to have capability on these 2 bands.

Are most SoCal users of 902/903MHz able to work FM? If so, where do most operate during contests?
