Although my 'coffee shop pontifications' were written for club members of 2 Ventura Co, CA clubs, the general comments have applicability in the PNW & elsewhere!!

ATTENTION: The June ARRL VHF Contest will be held this weekend.
The ARRL June VHF Contest (also includes UHF bands) is a great event for all hams, including those who must abide by HOA CCRs, spousal CCRs, family vacation plans, business trips, etc.
Why participate in a VHF contest, or for that matter, any contest?
a. See how far you can communicate on VHF/UHF (EMCOMM practice too)
b. Enjoy great SoCal weather, sites, & sights,
c. Use your amateur radio license privileges
d. Try out a new acquired transceiver or antenna
e. Enjoy the challenge of NOT using a repeater or relying on 'pesky' F-2 for HF QSOs
f. Experience transcontinental QSOs on 6 meters (maybe)
g. Experience the challenge of NOT using 'I-Whatevers' *
Marty Woll, N6VI, + a number of other VHFers will operate from Fraiser Peak (8200 ft above sea level) during the entire contest. A number of Rovers will motor around SoCal. Several Ventura Co. hams plan to travel to local hilltops to extend QSO distances and to work more stations. Try to get 'on the air' to see if you can communicate with them and lots of others. I plan to operate from CN87/CN88 (look up these grids on a Grid Locator Chart) , but will be looking South on 6 meters.
During the past week there have been several notable Sporadic E openings on 6 meters with single hops and multi hops. Lots of transcontinental QSOs have been made and at least 1 local ham worked Estonia (4 or 5 hops) on 6 meters. Many 6 meter stations from CO, AZ, TX, OK have been easily worked too.
As previously promised: 'Tantalizing' contest details follow:
