OAPBOX: My operation as a Rover entry for the 6 Meter Spring 2012 Sprint was
eset with inputs from Murphy and my domestic life. Because my XYL and
tep-daughter decided to ‘make investments’ at a Casino, I began the SPRINT from a
emote parking lot of the Casino in CN88RK, near Anacortes, WA. After making 4
SOs, Casino Security personnel arrived to inform me that my signal was
ausing interference to their security system…..therefore I went QRT in the
ame of good neighbor policy! After the ladies actually left the casino with
ore money than they had arrived with, we drove to a small hilltop (CN88RK)
verlooking the Anacortes Harbor and with a good view toward Mt. Erie. With an FT-857
nd very elderly “Henry Hi-Par” three element 6 Meter Hill-Topper Yagi I made
n additional 10 QSOs before my XYL decided that we needed to drive up Mt.
rie (CN88RH)on an unscheduled basis. My plan to operate for the last 15 or
0 minutes of the Sprint from the South end of Whidbey Island, WA (CN87tw)
suddenly went down the drain. On Mt. Erie, in between taking photos for the distaff
ide of my life, I planned to make a few more QSOs: I plugged the radio’s power
ord into the cigarette lighter socket and was rewarded with a dead radio.
hecking connections in the maze of parts, clothing, and power cords in the
ammed full car trunk , my radio still did not work; however I could hear a very
oft ‘beep’ each time I plugged in the FT857’s power cord . Eventually the
photo session was complete and we left for our vacation QTH in the
iddle of Whidbey Island (CN88ra) with an ETA of 5 minutes after the end of the
PRINT, and with another 10 minutes drive needed to even get into the Northern
nd of CN87…..and without an operating radio in my possession. We rolled into
ur driveway at 8:06 PM, and as I began to remove lots of clothing, radio
ear, antenna, tripod, & mast from the car trunk, I discovered the cause of
he soft beep: I had been plugging a 2 meter FM rig, instead of the FT857 into the power socket.
No wonder the 857’s display did not work! I didn’t get to
ctivate CN87, but my FT857 works again. However this year, I did manage to
perate in all 5 Spring 2012 SPRINTS from 3 different locations in DM04 and 2
pots in CN88. Long live Murphy and Mothers’ Day!
