The first time I worked him was from Santa Cruz Ca. I did not even have SSB
on 2 meters. A friend, WA6HHQ (The Elecraft factory was just down the
street) had just  worked him. I tuned to 144.17 on an Alinco FM rig
connected to a Ringo ranger and heard him. I asked Eric to inquire of Paul
if he could switch to FM. Sure enough, he was full quieting and full scale,
as if he were in the room. Had a nice chat.  Last time was from here in
Florence  a few years back. 
Driving 3 hours up the hill to work hams stateside certainly demonstrated
the "ham spirit". 
He will certainly be missed.
