Wayne, etal,
I've an even better plan:
Encourage all those newbies who have just been licensed and have hurried
down to their favorite amateur cnfectionary wherein they have purchased a
handheld which sure as the sun rises has at least 2 meters if not 2 metere
and 70 centimeters. A sign placed appropriately at the exit of the
confectioary could suggest the dates for the year's contests with the
suggestion that instead of being destinated on the local reeater they get
out on the porch and call CQ on any number of 2 meter frequencies or, for a
real challenge, the only 70 cm frequency left for simplex operation thanks
to the folks allocating pairs to private Spanky's Clubhouse entrepreneurs.
Depending on how serious and how sincere the conversation, and how comitted
the individual is to amateur radio (beyond showing dad that I can do it too)
you would find a lot of yout willing to give contesting a try.
