I'm with you on this, but the sponsoring clubs, not ARRL or its officials, choose the convention dates. I have lobbied for a long time about this, but we have to work it forward several years due to the long lead time required to secure a venue for the convention. Actually, last year's SWD convention (San Diego) was not on the contest weekend (but was on Yom Kippur, upsetting several people who otherwise would have attended), and next year (Yuma) will be in February, far from any VHF contest date but, as usual, in conflict with the ARRL DX CW weekend.
If you want to know how much pull I have in these matters, consider that, in most years, the ARRL Board meeting in CT is the same weekend as the ARRL January VHF SS, taking me out of the running of that one most of the time. Too many events . . . not enough weekends!
