Robert, let me give you a tip on those units.  Most likely it is all a
matter of tuning.  If you tune it up to work best on receive, then there is
not enough LO injection to operate the transmit mixer properly.  OTOH tuning
for max power out will make the receiver almost inoperative.  You need to
tune for a happy medium and then use appropriate preamplifier and amplifiers
externally.  So there may be nothing wrong with your unit - or maybe so...
