[Wswss] More Google & Morse

Guys, 

For many years the Western Union Telegraph Co. set up a nationwide 
Morse telegraph circuit for the Morse Telegraph Club which held the 
annual chapter meetings on a weekend near Samuel Morse's birthday. 

It was interesting to listen to those old boys talking back & forth on
the 
sounder.  The code is different and trying to copy it on a sounder is
very 
strange compared to listening to tones.  And a lot of the fists on line
were 
terrible!  But the old boys could copy it. 

After listening to it at the telegraph office for a few days, I decided
to go 
out to the meeting and see what was happening.  I was about 50 years old
at the time,  and I think the next youngest person was about 75 and the
rest were
older than that!  Mostly  railroad telegraphers, a few Western Union ops.


That was one of the more "fun" things I did while working many years for
W.U.
One of the others was climbing those poles along the railroad tracks
checking wires. 
Yes, we were still using those wires for some circuits up into the late
1970's! And you'd 
be amazed how well they worked and how far you can run a teletype circuit
on an 
old railroad wire!
