There is so much free space in the Extra segment that QRM is not an
issue. Take a listen from 3.625-3.700 and there is not much going on
there. Historically when we started the net the idea was to be in the
General class portion of the band to maximize access, but these days
upgrading to Extra is trivial enough to not be a barrier (and maybe would
encourage some to upgrade).
I haven't checked into the net in years because the time is not convenient
for me (if the sun is up I am likely outside). That combined with the ever
changing net time and frequency does not entice me to check in. Also, my
160M antenna does not work well on 80M and is my only "HF" antenna. Now if
you want a good regional western states liaison band look at 160M in the
evenings year round. Open to General+, but antennas are an issue HI
HI. Even a seriously compromised antenna should be able to work out to
1000 miles though. It is amazing the number of VHF+ weak signal guys I
hear on 160M. Guess it takes a similar personality to spend hours
listening to noise while scrounging for DX.
