Bill,
Your comments are good and the possibilities you mention may be feasible. I
would like to share my thoughts on the subject.
The majority of the VHF/UHF operators I know or meet on the air have HF
capabilities. Most work 75/80M with dipoles or verticals. I have no idea
how many are using IRLP/Echolink, or have invested in D-Star equipment.
My investment in VHF/UHF weak signal and HF equipment has been made to have
fun with the hobby, and utilize the equipment to it's fullest. I see no
reason to move a long standing HF net that promotes VHF/UHF weak signal work
to other means. Propagation, good or bad, is something that individuals
working HF understand and live with. It is always nice to have as many
checkins to a net as possible, but for some to miss the checkin from time to
time due to propagation it is not reason to move to another mode.
I have only been working weak signal on VHF/UHF for about 15 years so I am
sure others may have comments of their own.
73,
David, W6VNQ

One possible answer: As its a VHF-oriented net, why not take it to VHF.
The csimplest way would be to use repeaters intertied using IRLP or
Echolink. An even better way would be to set up a D-Star conference server
dedicated toio weak signal activities that could be used by all weak signal
gropups needing a regular meeting place. Something similat to the VoIP
Hurricane Watch Net.
In my book, 75 meters is naught but a holdover from the days before there
was good quality, relatively inexpensive VHF and UHF geer and a dynasty
prior to the amazing advances in VHF/UHF repeater linking that is fast
making the need for an "HF gathering spot" to be outmoded and totally
obsolete.
Also, how many weak signal operators are there that either have no HF gear
-- or no room for a monster-sized 75 meter antenna? Likely far more than
have even a 75 meter dipole. By moving the net to an interlikned VHF / UHF
concept, theres every chance you will pick up a load of ops who would join
if not for the need for that monster sized HF antenna or laying out over
$1,000 for a radio they might use only occasionally.
Anyhow, give it some thought. With so many repeaters in the nation (almost
9000 I believe) and many lying dormant other than weekday dtive time -- I
would bet it would be a definate possibility to get a large number to sign
on to a project such as this. All it takes is to ask the owners.
