Ping Jocks,
I will be active on 50.260 and 144.140 (hopefully simultaneously)
tonight and Saturday morning at the beginning of the contest. During
the next week I will try to operate in my local morning hours, and next
weekend I will try to operate from a portable location in CM87 with an
excellent horizon to the east and north. So next weekend (May 6-9) will
be when I try to push for some DX...maybe I can even get lucky enough
for a E-skip and MS link for double hop distances. Contest rules and
references to operating techniques can be found at
http://www.ykc.com/wa5ufh/WSJTGROUP/randomhour.htm
Note that the contest exchange is grid square rather than the typical
numerical report. Please use the "Random Hour format" so that each
transmission has an identifier of the intended recipient to avoid
confusion (and no single tone messages).
Since activity out here on the left coast is typically pretty low, I
don't expect to be bothered by local QRM. If that is a problem after
all, I will be calling CQ with an offset indication (for example, CQ U7
means I will listen for replies up 7 KHz from the CQ frequency, and I
will QSY there to complete the contact if I hear somebody calling). For
the most part I will be CQing in the 1st sequence since virtually
everybody is to the east or north of me. However, I will of course do a
lot of monitoring of both sequences. I will attempt to move stations to
the other band, so watch for my QSY requests at the conclusion of the
QSO (I might send "QSY 267" or "QSY 151" along with "RRR" or "73" to
indicate that the QSO is complete and that I am listening for you on the
other band). Don't get confused if you hear me on one band and think
that I am not on the other band....I can transmit simultaneously on both
bands with two separate stations for 6m and 2m (two computers, rigs,
antennas....by the way, it wouldn't it be nice if WSJT could make use of
stereo sound cards and operate simultaneously in two windows on a single
computer?). If I do QSY, I will stay on the same sequence used for the
original QSO (even if is the "wrong" sequence considering who is
westernmost).
If you hear me in QSO or just calling a station, please don't wait for
my QSO to finish to start calling me. Since the duty cycle of MS pings
is usually pretty low, the extra QRM is not a problem, and if a new
callsign is "stacked up" we can transition right into the next QSO.
I will be operating in the low power, unassisted, category....so I will
not be on Ping Jockey or making schedules.
Hope to contact a few new stations and grids in this contest.
73,
Walt, AJ6T
