Hello WSWSS,

Ned, AA7A, here to mention to everyone in WSWSS that we are having the 2004
ARRL SW Division convention in Phoenix, 27 to 29 August. You might ask
yourself two questions on reading that comment:

1) Why should an ardent VHF/UHF/Microwave operator go to just any old ARRL
Division Convention, and
2) Why should anyone ever go to Phoenix in August for pleasure?!?

Let me give you some sound answers to these good questions.

#1 The program chairman for the 2004 ARRL SW Division convention is a noted
VHF/UHF nut, AA7A. He was given free reign to mold the programs to his
liking. They may have erred, but in you favor. The following is a short list
of the programs that we will be having at the convention:

* VHF QRP Portable Contesting by N7IR; holder of most SW Division VHF (and
HF BTW) QRP contest records

* VHF Hilltop Operations by WA7JTM; rare appearance of noted DX'er,
contester and weak signal enthusiast

* VHF DXpeditions by Ned Stearns, AA7A; known to have operated VHF DX from
DXCC entities looking like small piles of shells

* Microwave Forum with WA7CJO, WA7ULG and W7CS; you know these guys and you
might just learn a thing or two

* Multi-band VHF rover station by N6NB; testing the limits of contest rover
operations

* Station integration - voice & data distribution in a VHF contest station
by Ned Stearns; if you don't understand what this means you probably should
attend

* Remote Controlled Amateur Radio by W7KW and W6WTG; CC&R got you down? Take
a look at this!

* VUCC, DXCC, WAS and even WAZ card checking; One stop card checking service

* These and 45 other programs covering BPL, ARDF, AMSAT, TAPR, Barry
Goldwater giving his autobiography (can that be right?!?), and ARRL forums
plus over 40 vendors booths

If you cannot wait for WSWSS' October convention for your VHF/UHF/Microwave
experience, you might consider Phoenix in August.

#2 About the temperature in Phoenix in August. The convention staff
absolutely guarantees that the temperature in the convention will be 78
degrees or less. (However, I wouldn't recommend picking up an old HP 608E
outside at the swapmeet on Saturday morning without oven mitts.) So, you
will not have to deal with the heat to enjoy three days of ham radio fun at
the convention.

Please check out the website for the convention here:

Thanks for your time.
