I have had a lot of fun with my Icom IC-Q7A.  It's a dual-band (144/440
MHz) hand-held that has wideband receive 30-1299 MHz.  Only has 350 mW
output, but here in the southeast Houston area I can hit most of our local
repeaters fairly easily.  I had promised it to my younger daughter if she
got her license, but she lost interest, so I'm using it now.  Easy to
operate, easy to program, and very portable.
