Rare, bright visual display of Au noted by N6ZE 30OCT2003, 0100 - 0215 UTC.

Flight altitude 39,000 ft

Observed from NJ to Columbia, SC, even with bright 1/2 moon in SW sky.

Au curtain typically up to 5 deg up from horizon.Between Gordonsville, VA and Greensboro, NC, reached up 15 deg. from horizon and was brightest. I saw Au curtain from bearing approx 240 deg to 330 deg (mag)(Time 0130 UTC)

Au was curtain was white and exhibited no shimmering.

I made turn to South at Columbia, SC and lost sight of the Au, but Au was still above the horizon at that point. (Couldn't inconvenience the passengers!)
