JUST A NOTE TO FOLLOW UP ON THIS THREAD
Last year the SBMS started a 2GHz and up club contest, there was very
little participation
we are still going to run with it , why change what we have as in the 10ghz
contest
"if it works leave it alone"
you can read the rules to the 2GHz and up contest on the link below
http://www.ham-radio.com/sbms/club_test.doc
we are going to change the date to the third weekend in MAY
if there are any comments on this please reply a.s.a.p as it will soon be
going to print to promote it

Subject: [amsat-bb] ARRL 10 GHz + Contest 2004
Hello the net,
THIS IS ONLY A PROPOSAL, AND A STARTING POINT FOR DISCUSSION>>>>
The intent is to increase activity and to add more interesting ways to
QSO for valid contest points.
No "magic" or "sacred cows" here, just some possible new directions to
take.
Is everyone happy with the structure of the ARRL 10 GHz + contest ?
Are there any changes needed ??
Some ideas for 2004's contest:
1. BONUS BAND, add a bonus band like 2304, or 3456, or 5760 MHz.
Only one bonus band per year
as defined ahead of time. Possibly 5760 MHz for 2004, 3456 for 2005,
and 2304 for 2006, then start the rotation again.
The object is to increase (encourage) activity in these three lower
microwave bands.
Many people have the equipment, lets' use it. One bonus band per year
only.
Bonus band QSO's distance points would count the same as a 10 GHz QSO.
NO operator points would count for the bonus band. This is not a
contest for the bonus band only.
You must operate on 10 GHz as a minimum.
i.e., distance points only, no 100 points for the first time you work
an operator on the bonus band.
Bonus band qso's could be used in the 10 GHz or the 10 GHz + categories.
2. New MULTIPLIER FACTOR for 24 GHz and higher. These millimeterwave
bands still need some encouragement
to gain widespread popularity as has been experienced with the 10 GHz
band.
Possibly add a rules change to include:
for the final score double (2X) the distance score for 24 GHz QSOs
for 47 GHz and 76 GHz bands use, a 4X factor to the distance score.
for bands in the 120 GHz band and higher use a 10X factor for
distance scores
Possibly a 10X factor for all bands above 10 GHz to encourage activity
and experimentation.
3. AERONAUTICAL MOBILE: Proposed new rules change to ALLOW
aeronautical
operations for the 2004 contest only. Possibly extend into the 2005, 10
GHz contest weekends.
The technology is here that would allow safe contest operation from an
airplane.
The VUCC program prohibition to aeronautical QSOs would continue and NOT
be changed.
4. SATELLITE OPERATIONS: Allow any satellite qso with a uplink OR a
downlink frequency in the
10 GHz or higher bands or in the bonus band.
Operator points count but the distance points are at a ( 0.1 X) 1/10th
scale factor to compensate for the line of sight
and repeater issues. Distances would be calculated between the 6 digit
grids of the terrestrial locations.
Manned and unmanned satellites ( more than 500 Km above the earth) could
be included.
Terrestrial repeaters may also be useable in the contest. See next item.
Maybe the Shuttle or the ISS could be equipped with Microwave equipment
narrow band or wideband FM !!!
Dust off those Gunnplexers and avoid the doppler correction.
5. Include the use of terrestrial microwave repeaters that operate on
the bonus band and all bands 10 GHz and higher.
Distance points would only be for the operator to the repeater site.
Repeater must ID with the 6 digit grid.
example: 2 operators could QSO direct, point to point then operate thru
the repeater for an additional QSO.
QSOs thru the microwave repeater less than 10 Km from the operator DO
NOT count.
At least 1 operator would have to travel 10 Km (driving) before they
could QSO again.
In band or crossband repeaters for the 10 GHz and higher bands and the
bonus band could be used.
No other repeaters using other bands could be used for QSO points.
Linked repeater WOULD NOT count unless the linking was in the 10 GHz and
higher bands or the bonus band.
6. What are your ideas..... ?
Lets encourage and promote microwave band use.
