If you guys weren't on last week you missed a lot of good meteors and
activity during the eta Aquarids meteor shower. All meteor scatter
contacts were made with either FSK441 or JT6M modes in WSJT.
6m 10Q x 10g
2m 10Q x 10G
1.75m 0Q x 0G
Best DX was on 6m with WB4ECR EM66QF at 2952km. The contact started out
as an MS to Es link, but then turned into full blown 2x Es (with pronounced
meteor enhancement) after the contact, but unfortunately not valid for the
rally. Almost two hours later, after the Es died out audibly, I worked
WB4ECR again on JT44 with -21 to -27db signals. Best 2m DX was N0KQY in
DM98.
Shortest DX was 321km with N6ENU on 6m backscatter. We almost completed on
2m, but I had to leave for work.
Almost 100% completions in the mornings on both 6 and 2m on any eastward
path. No luck with the guys in WA/OR on 2m, but 6m was a walk in the
park. Three contacts in three grids with WB2FKO on his 2m rover
expeditions. Mike and I have had 100% completions on all of his
expeditions. I can't thank Mike enough for enduring high winds, blowing
dust, antennas falling down on the car, broken amp, etc., yet he patches
things up and still completes the sked! BTW, Mike was running only 35
watts into two 5 element yagis on a 20' portable mast!
Only one attempt at 222, but nothing heard. It was late in the shower and
I was only running 25w. It is possible to make 222 contacts with 25w and a
222-7wl during the major meteor showers.
Does it take a big station to do this? NO. On 2m I was running 100 watts
into a 2m5wl @ 25' mounted on my truck with a portable mast.
