Hi Bill,
In the case of this amp, all the grids are tied to ground, there is no
bias,  
they idle at around 100 mA or so with the 2700 volts.  I've been told you
can
plug in a  3-500Z or  3-400Z  in with no change and it will also work. 
The sockets are the same, but I don't have any  400's or 500's  to 
try it!
